President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House on Wednesday for a make-or-break session, despite new accusations from the president this past Friday that South Africa is "out of control" and committing genocide. Speaking on Air Force One as it returned from the Persian Gulf region, Trump repeated his claim that White Afrikaner South African farmers are being slaughtered and forced off their land. The Afrikaners are descendants of mostly Dutch settlers who first arrived in South Africa in 1652. Secretary of State Marco Rubio elaborated on these claims Sunday on CBS, saying "all evidence [indicates] the farmers in South Africa are being treated brutally." Some 50 Afrikaners were flown to the U.S. as refugees last week. Rubio said there’s "more to come". South Africa, and its president, denies claims of genocide and harassment. Could the Oval Office and the Wednesday meeting be the setting for a Zelenskyy-style dressing down of the South African president? In February, Ukraine’s president was involved in a shouting match with Trump and others, which reportedly led to him being ejected from the White House. "The meeting is set to occur at a time when the relationship between the two countries has soured to unprecedented lows," analyst Frans Cronje, Yorktown Foundation for Freedom advisory board member, told Fox News Digital. South Africa took legal action against U.S. ally Israel, accusing it of genocide in its war in Gaza, at the International Court of Justice.Ramaphosa’s ruling party, the ANC, has shown for the terror group Hamas.Trade and military links with Iran and allegedly nuclear co-operation.Shown for the designated terrorist group Hezbollah.Military links with Russia. The creation of the controversial Land Expropriation Act, which is aimed at seizing land the government wants in certain circumstances without compensation and which reportedly led to Trump’s focus on White Afrikaner families and claims they are being killed. South Africa is "hosting Hamas and Hezbollah, doing business with Iran’s IRGC, prosecuting Israel at the ICJ and cozying up to Beijing and Moscow. These choices have consequences," Max Meizlish, senior research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Fox News Digital. Meizlish said South Africa has "attracted the ire of the president and key of Congress, who play significant roles in shaping the future of U.S.-South African relations. Unfortunately, President Ramaphosa and his colleagues in the ANC do not appear to fully appreciate this fact. President Trump should insist on meaningful change and be ready to back his demands up with tools like targeted sanctions and tariffs." But will the White House meeting be icy, feisty, even loud? Not from the South African side, former U.S. diplomat and Daily Maverick Associate Editor J. Brooks Spector told Fox News Digital. "Ramaphosa has a long track record of careful negotiating with adversaries." He doesn’t raise his voice, even when others become heated. This reporter has seen this first hand. In a smoke-filled room in 1990 in South Africa’s dusty Free State, I watched Ramaphosa, then a leader of a Black miners' union, sometimes even smile as he quietly and successfully calmed down [the] often-shouting White miners accused of killing Black colleagues underground and got the murders stopped. Spector continued, "It is almost certain Ramaphosa and his team have closely studied the way three recent prior meetings with Trump have gone – those with Zelenskyy (Ukraine), Starmer (the United Kingdom) and Carney (Canada) – in an effort to draw lessons about how to present their best face. He will not make neophyte negotiation mistakes." Cronje told Fox News Digital that Ramaphosa and his country badly need the U.S. "At home, Mr Ramaphosa is presiding over economic stagnation, with South Africa facing a rate of economic growth estimated at just over 1% together with an unemployment rate of over 30%. Mr. Ramaphosa will, therefore, be under great pressure to secure a deal." Some 600 U.S. companies operate in South Africa. Ramaphosa has taken four top ministers to Washington hoping to offer new deals, especially reportedly on natural gas, minerals and agricultural product sales to the U.S., and possibly finally the licensing of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet system in South Africa. Cronje noted a military perspective the U.S. will also want to consider: "South Africa commands the southern sea route between the Indian and Atlantic oceans, which is an important trade and naval choke point." Meizlish added that South Africa "holds vast mineral wealth and could anchor U.S. investment in Africa, but that doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye to its alignment with America’s enemies." South Africa’s chief rabbi, Dr. Warren Goldstein, told Fox News Digital that South Africa could "easily withdraw" its ICJ case against Israel if it wanted to, adding that "opinion polls show that there is very little domestic for his (Ramaphosa’s) anti-Israel stance, with most holding positive views towards Israel, sharing the same conservative Christian values that deeply resonate with Mr. Trump’s base in the U.S." Meizlish said, "This visit can’t be about optics or deals that fail to address the root of South Africa's malign foreign policy. Trump needs to push Ramaphosa to make substantive, structural reforms in his country's foreign policy while also creating pathways for greater U.S. investment. It can't just be one or the other." As South African politicians swept through Washington on Tuesday on a major lobbying exercise, trying to get traction on the idea of focusing on trade, Rubio told senators during a hearing that a reset in relations might be possible. "If there's a willingness on their side to reset relations, obviously [that's] something we'll explore, but we do so with eyes wide open to what they've done so far," he said. Fox News Digital reached out to the South African government for comment but received no response. BudgIT, a civic tech non-profit organisation, has uncovered 11,122 projects valued at N6.93 trillion inserted by the national assembly into the budget. The organisation, in a statement posted on its social media platform on Tuesday, said the practice, which began as an “isolated irregularities has, over the years, evolved into a deeply entrenched culture of exploitation and abuse by top-ranking of the national assembly”. On February 28, the president signed the N54.99 trillion 2025 appropriation bill into law, marking a 99.96 percent increase from the 2024 budget of N27.5 trillion. The national assembly approved the bill on February 13, after revisions to Tinubu’s initial budget proposal of N49.7 trillion. The key breakdown of the 2025 budget includes a total expenditure of N54.99 trillion, statutory transfers of N3.65 trillion, and a recurrent (non-debt) expenditure of N13.64 trillion. “Our analysis reveals that 238 projects valued above N5 billion each, with a cumulative value of N2.29 trillion, were inserted with little to no justification,” BudgIT said. “984 projects worth N1.71 trillion and 1,119 projects within the range of N500 million to N1 billion, totalling N641.38 billion, were indiscriminately inserted, raising questions about their relevance and alignment with national priorities. “These insertions, far from promoting development, appear tailored to satisfy narrow political interests and personal gains rather than the citizens’ interests. “A closer look shows that 3,573 projects worth N653.19 billion are assigned directly to federal constituencies and 1,972 projects worth N444.04 billion to senatorial districts. “Categorically, some of the most glaring anomalies include: 1,477 streetlight projects worth N393.29 billion; 538 boreholes totalling N114.53 billion; 2,122 ICT projects valued at N505.79 billion; and N6.74 billion earmarked for ‘empowerment of traditional rulers’.” BudgIT further said 39 percent of all insertions, such as 4,371 projects worth N1.72 trillion, were forced into the ministry of agriculture’s budget, inflating its capital allocation from N242.5 billion to N1.95 trillion. “The Ministries of Science and Technology and Budget and Economic Planning also saw bloated allocations of N994.98 billion and N1.1 trillion, respectively, from insertions alone,” the firm said. “Even more concerning is the targeted misuse of agencies like the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (Lagos) and the Federal Cooperative College, Oji River, as dumping grounds for politically motivated projects. “These agencies lack the technical capacity to execute such projects, leading to rampant underperformance and waste. For example, the Federal Cooperative College, Oji River, a training institution, was saddled with N3 billion for utility vehicles to farmers and distribution agents; N1.5 billion for rural electrification in Rivers State; and N1 billion for solar street lights in Enugu State. “These are examples of agencies operating outside their mandates, managing projects unrelated to their statutory functions, and adding zero value to national development.” ‘PRESIDENCY HAS REMAINED SILENT’ Despite the findings, BudgIT said the presidency has remained “conspicuously silent”. It added that no response was received from any of the institutions after several letters, and not a single institution has taken responsibility for the anomalies BudgIT, therefore, called on the president to “exercise stronger executive leadership and reform the budgeting process to ensure alignment with the medium-term national development plan (2021-2025) and other national priorities”. “We urge the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to seek a constitutional interpretation from the Supreme Court regarding the extent of the National Assembly’s appropriation powers, particularly its authority to unilaterally introduce new capital projects without Executive concurrence,” the organisation said. “We hope that the anticorruption agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (IC), will also take action to track these projects and ensure Nigeria gets value for money. “We also call on citizens, the media, civil society organisations, and the development community to speak out and demand reform. “This is not merely about financial mismanagement, it is a matter of justice, equity, and the future of able governance in Nigeria.” BudgIT said it is imperative that the 2025 budget “serve the interests of the Nigerian people, not a privileged few”. https://www.thecable.ng/budgit-nassembly-inserted-11122-projects-worth-n6-9tn-into-2025-budget/ Mynd44 Lalasticlala Nlfpmod |

I've always said that the mentality that gave rise to Boko Haram, has always been a part and parcel of the Northern mindset. Google stock drops nearly 10% after Apple says it could ditch search engine as iPhone default Shares of Google parent Alphabet Inc. tanked more than 7% on Wednesday after a senior Apple executive signaled that the iPhone maker was looking at search engine alternatives for its Safari web browser. Eddie Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, testified on Wednesday as part of the Justice Department’s antitrust lawsuit against Google that Apple was “actively looking at” AI-powered search engines which would replace Google as the default option on the iPhone and other devices. Alphabet shares were recently off more than 9%, or $15.25, at $149.95. Cue, who reports directly to CEO Tim Cook, testified in court on Wednesday that Apple has noticed a decrease in the number of searches that were conducted by Safari s — an increasing number of whom have migrated to AI, according to Bloomberg. Cue said he expects artificial intelligence-driven search platforms — such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Perplexity AI and Anthropic — to eventually supplant traditional search engines like Google. He added that Apple plans to integrate these emerging tools as search options within Safari down the line. “We’ll include them in the lineup — though they likely won’t be set as the default,” he said, noting that the services still need refinement. Cue confirmed that Apple has held preliminary talks with Perplexity. “Before AI came into play, I didn’t see any of the alternatives as serious contenders,” he said. “But I think the landscape is changing. There’s now real potential thanks to new players approaching the challenge with fresh perspectives.” Apple currently integrates ChatGPT as a feature within Siri and is expected to introduce Google’s Gemini — its AI-powered search tool — sometime later this year. According to Cue, Apple also evaluated AI offerings from Anthropic, Perplexity, DeepSeek and Elon Musk’s Grok during the process. Cue emphasized that the deal with OpenAI does not limit Apple’s flexibility, saying it “allows [Apple] to add other AI providers into the company’s operating system, including its own.” Cue revealed that before ChatGPT was selected to power Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, the company had evaluated multiple contenders — including Google. Shares of Google’s parent company Alphabet were down nearly 7% as of mid-day on Wednesday. Google Finance He described the process as a “bake-off” and said Google submitted a term sheet that included “a lot of things Apple wouldn’t agree to and didn’t agree to with OpenAI.” Cue emphasized that the rapid pace of innovation in technology could eventually render even today’s most essential devices obsolete. “You may not need an iPhone 10 years from now as crazy as it sounds,” he said. “The only way you truly have true competition is when you have technology shifts. Technology shifts create these opportunities. AI is a new technology shift, and it’s creating new opportunities for new entrants.” He also noted that for AI platforms to remain competitive, they’ll need to significantly enhance their search indexes. Still, even if that progress is slow, he believes the advantages of AI-driven tools may already be enough to entice s. “There’s enough money now, enough large players, that I don’t see how it doesn’t happen,” Cue said, referring to a broader move away from traditional search engines toward AI alternatives. Alphabet’s stock dropped by as much as 7% on Wednesday, helping to pull the broader market downward. Apple also took a hit, falling up to 2.5% following Cue’s testimony. The S&P 500 Index, which had been up more than 0.5% earlier in the day, briefly turned negative. Eddie Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, testified on Wednesday as part of the Justice Department’s antitrust lawsuit against Google. WireImage In 2022, Google paid Apple $20 billion to remain the default search engine on Safari across iPhones, iPads and Macs. This figure was disclosed in court documents during the Justice Department’s antitrust lawsuit against Google, marking the first public confirmation of the payment amount. The agreement between Google and Apple has been a focal point in the DOJ’s case, which alleges that Google’s substantial payments to secure default search engine status on various platforms have contributed to its dominance in the search market. The DOJ contends that such arrangements hinder competition by making it challenging for rival search engines to gain visibility and market share. The Post has sought comment from Alphabet. https://nypost.com/2025/05/07/business/google-stock-drops-9-after-apple-says-it-could-ditch-search-engine/?utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=nypost&utm_medium=social Mynd44 Lalasticlala Nlfpmod |

A World Bank report has shown that 39.4% of Nigerians lack access to electricity. The apex bank shared this insight in its recently published Poverty and Equity Brief for April 2025. The data comes amid statements by the country's Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, claiming that 150 million people in the country have access to adequate electricity. Adelabu made the claim during a ministerial briefing organised by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation in April. While speaking with SaharaReporters, the Minister's spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji, defended the claim after harsh criticisms from the Nigerian populace, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). "There is nothing wrong with the Minister's statement. We know that we are about 230 million persons in Nigeria. However, while electricity can be unreliable in of availability, there is access for 150 million people—even if the electricity may not be available to the extent to which they want it, they are connected,” he said. “However, we are working to make things better and provide better electricity while working to ensure that those not connected are connected too,” he added. The NLC described the Minister's statement—that 150 million Nigerians have access to “adequate electricity” with a power generation of 5,500MW—as a blatant insult to Nigerians' intelligence and lived realities. "For the Minister to suggest that over 150 million Nigerians have access to reliable power in a country that struggles to generate a meagre and inconsistent 5,000 megawatts — far below the global benchmark of 1,000MW per one million people — is to insult the intelligence and lived realities of Nigerians,” the Congress stated in its response. The NLC, in a statement, pointed out that based on global standards, Nigeria should be generating at least 150,000MW to provide reliable electricity to its population—far beyond the 5,500MW the country can currently generate, which remains erratic and unreliable. The NLC further questioned the Minister’s claims, asking where the power plants capable of achieving such output are located and whether the necessary transmission infrastructure has been upgraded to such a high level of supply. "Where are the power plants that make this level of supply possible? Where is the upgraded transmission infrastructure to such output? Why are our homes still shrouded in darkness and our factories shutting down daily?” the NLC asked, challenging the validity of the Minister's statement. The Congress labelled the Minister's remarks as a “bad joke” to the Nigerian people, stressing that millions—especially in rural areas and urban slums—continue to live without electricity. Nigerians have long lamented poor access to electricity, with inadequate infrastructure and alleged corruption blamed for the incessant power outages in different parts of the country. https://saharareporters.com/2025/05/05/nearly-40-nigerians-lack-access-electricity-world-bank#google_vignette Mynd44 Lalasticlala Nlfpmod |
