Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was absent when the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) met in Abuja on Saturday night, News360 Nigeria reports.

The meeting was to welcome new entrants into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but Oborevwori, who recently teamed up with the party, did not attend.

Oborevwori, who swept to victory in 2023 under the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), however, dumped the party earlier in the week, citing several factors.

The governor, his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP in the South-South state said they are collapsing their structure into the leading APC, which they argue serves as a better platform for the oil-rich state.

Other persons who attended the meeting include Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North; the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo; a former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege; APC scribe, Felix Morka; a former governorship candidate in Delta State, Great Ogboru, and other of the National Assembly.

Saturday’s meeting was held at the Imo Governors’ Lodge in the nation’s capital.

The recent wave of defections from the PDP to the APC has stirred debates among observers, politicians, and Nigerians alike.

With Okowa, a ranking member of the PDP who was the party’s vice presidential candidate in the 2023 election, ing APC, analysts argue that the most recent defections are a big blow to the main opposition party’s move to retake power in 2027.

But some PDP chieftains, including Bode George, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, are unmoved by the development.

They say the party would bounce back stronger ahead of the next general elections.

“What impact has the APC, as a government, given to the people? There is anger in the land. What do you think they are going to do there, if not for personal embellishment?” George, a former Ondo State military governor, said on Friday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“The people of Delta are naturally PDP . They know the kind of positive impact they enjoyed under the PDP national government. So, if you now decide to go, we wish you the best of luck. We’ve seen it before—those who trooped out eventually came back, because they’re heading into an organisation that is so personally owned.”

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has jumped into a more bigger and troubled waters.

APC is like a personal estate that is bent on selfish and personal aggrandizement.I think his defection will affect his work and the infrastructural development he is carrying out across the state.

If sheriff Oborevwori had remained in PDP,he will still have secured his second term because Deltans are already in love with his government and style of leadership.

The APC leaders in the state are the kind of people that will not condescend to Sheriff Oborevwori with the likes of Ovie Omo agege, James Ibori, Great Ogboru, Ned nwoko, etc so,there will be leadership problem in the state.Crisis is looming in Delta state APC.

He literally ran away from the devil into the deep blue sea.

The same APC will still be the ones that will work against his reelection, this is what we call the enemies within

It is not wise to mingle with your enemies

That is what they are hinging on.

Governor sheriff Oborevwori shouldn't have gone to this length, because Deltans are already in love with him because of his style of leadership and governance.

By this move,he had made more enemies while also drawing them closer to himself.his chances of securing his second term is now dicey

I believed all corrupt Nigerian politicians are one and same and hence don’t bother about party they belonged to until one poster here on Nairaland analyses how almost all states held by APC are engulfed in high crime rates, killings , insecurity and breakdown in law and order and been suggested there might be an unseen demonic power behind that party or coincidence in my opinion as I don’t believe in superstition. Maybe the Governor thought carefully about it and withdrew

Ona go stay in a corner of your rooms and be saying trash! U must know more than the number one citizen of a state. APC can’t win delta yoh said? All the people that conduct elections, that control the voters are defecting and you say they won’t win. How else do they win elections? Have you forgotten that Nigerian voters are controlled by their leaders!

People who analyze like you don’t even come out to vote

Nigeria is such a strange place. The word defector is a vile, ugly and negative word, used for people without integrity and who don't know what they stand for. Yet somehow, Nigerian politics has made defection an artform and celebrates men without values and integrity who chase money and influence from one party to another. Expect no meaningful changes with these lot at the helm of affairs

Very wrong and selfish move. It was all about the survival of Ibori and Okowa. For Ibori, it was about his relationship with BAT. For Okowa it must be about the ongoing probe into the missing 1.3trillion from the of the state during his tenure. Sheriff was his candidate and would naturally follow him seeing that they had not issue.

Decamping to APC simply was like existing PDP ing with ex PDP to all become ex PDP . Most of those within APC in Delta state were PDP . The likes of Ogboru were never .

There is no value that APC will add to the state, looking at the performances of APC governors nationwide and at the federal level.

Okowa could not deliver his state at the last elections, even with his VP candidacy. In the Presidential election LP scored close to 342K votes while PDP scored 161K votes. APC scored 90K votes. To get Sheriff into office, they had to appeal to PDP ers who were aggrieved against Okowa himself and also to appeal to LP ers and of course the usual exchange of hands for all. Okowa’s senatorial zone was a battle ground with LP. Ned Nwoko managed to win against Kenneth Kanma of LP. The same Ned Nwoko lost his house of reps to LP, as the candidate of PDP, Elumelu, was roundly defeated by Ms. Okolie of LP. Delta Central and South was a mixture of parties as Ibori worked against PDP in the state. So Okowa’s claim to be a grassroots mobilizer was tested and failed at those elections. LP and Obidients are a force to reckon with in Delta politics presently.

Infact LP would have swept PDP out of power, starting from Agbor, his home town. LP showed who was in control of the state. Omo Agege and APC quickly changed their slogans to Obidiently this or that, just to get LP ers on their side, after the Presidential elections. Delta north and South were lost by little margins to APC, as LP was in the mix.

Now that Sheriff has decamped, he can now claim to be free from the challenge of Omo Agege in Delta central, as power should remain there until 2031,
going by the power sharing formula….and that is if Anioma state has not been carved out of Delta state before then. However Ned Nwoko now has the challenge of Okowa and must once again confront Nwaoboshi. If APC fails to take a decision early, expect Nwoko to return to PDP to fight for his seat, as rumours are flying around that Okowa wants to return to the Senate.

Going with PDP structure meant going with the political office holders and not the physical structures like offices and secretariats. Meetings must be held at the ward levels to brief office holders. Sharing formula would be agreed at the ward levels to accommodate both parties, yet there are core PDP who would not want to have anything to do with APC.

PDP must go to court to permanently sort out the issue of decamping . Going to court also will help all the parties and not PDP alone. We know that the courts will be slow and delayed until the next elections, but the issue must be resolved once and for all.

I believe that if LP puts its house in order, the combination of the decamped PDP and existing APC will be given a run for their money in the state. LP may win the next governorship election in Delta state.

I am Deltan and I can tell you that he is making the biggest mistakes of his life. He is forcing PDP stakeholders to defeat with him. So they can do that but you see some will remain but he should knows that if the Ijaw decided not to go with him he would lost 2027 election. PDP is Delta whether you like it or not. Most PDP guys are very angry and they are insulting the governor wondering what sort of foolish move is that. He will lost 2027 election.
