The University of Abuja chapter of the Abuja Indigenous Student Association (AISA) has expressed its strongest opposition to the proposed change of name of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University.

Daily Trust had reported that the minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, while addressing newsmen after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday, announced the renaming of the university after the former head of state, Yakubu Gowon.

The president of AISA, Comrade Adamu Abdulbasit, while reacting to the development on Tuesday, said the indigenous students of Abuja are deeply concerned about the implications of this proposed change.

He said the University of Abuja had been a symbol of pride and identity for the people of Abuja and the nation at large, saying changing its name would not only erase its history but also undermine the cultural heritage of the Abuja people.

He said, “Furthermore, we believe that renaming the university after a former head of state, no matter how distinguished, is not in the best interest of the institution or the nation. The University of Abuja is a federal institution that belongs to all Nigerians, and its name should reflect its national character.”

The association, therefore, called on the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Education, and other relevant stakeholders to reject the proposed change of name and uphold the original name of the university.

The association further called on all well-meaning Nigerians to hands in the campaign to preserve the name and identity of their beloved institution.

University of Jos should have been the consideration, however the Jos Airport @ Hipang has been named after Yakubu Gowon

Godwin4444:
but u don't have problem with nnamdi azikwe airport in Abuja right?
Nnamdi Azikiwe University Akwa was named after who? Unlike the sophisticated West that rejected renaming a major institution in honour of it son. There are halls, streets and national monuments named after these nationalist everywhere across this nation.

If the people of Lagos can reject the renaming of UNILAG to Moshood Abiola UNILAG by GEJ, Abuja people have they right to reject the renaming of UNIABUJA.

Tinubu is heavily engrossed in anti igbo politics and someone close to him should tell him that such taunting tactics do not rattle the igbos anymore. No one worries about his tribal approach to national issues as everyone knows he can't do better. Going all out to celebrate a man who was responsible for the killing of millions of igbos at this juncture in Nigerias history is just pure petty politics. It is like Nwesom Wike renaming the PH stadium over the same Gowon at the height of his anti igbo outbursts while he was the governor of RiversState. .. You win nobody over with such moves. You only stiffen resolves elsewhere.

Wike committed a genocide at Obigbo, and suddenly he became tinubus favourite politician. Bayo Onanuga went on his infamous anti igbo rant and said some of the most unspeakable things about the igbo, Tinubu rewarded him with a top position in his government. Buhari was endlessly lambasting and lampooniing the igbos..., the more he did, the more he got from Tinubu, Obidients had their minor roforofo with Wole Soyinka and all of a sudden, Tinubu started naming streets and highways after Wole. Reno Omokiri them...
Now this..

This is a very odious pattern from a man who formed a political party whose integral political outlook revolves around petty ethnic baits and primutive taunts.

You only display the intensity of your autism when you leap to put the name of a genocidal Gowon in the same sentence with that of the man who gave you your independence from Britain, Azikiwe. Some of you inebriated agbadorian mutants need to get a grip.. seriously.

Yes, if the indigenes say they do not want something, their opinion must be respected. Abuja is not the West where they are trampled upon by outsiders because of the title of "good and accommodating people"

In 3 decades to come, the west will be tenants in their father's houses. It's not a prophecy it's a clear vision

Why do we think everything needs to be renamed? By 2040 when most of the promient VIPs away, everything would have been renamed except Nigeria. Very shallow thinking, they don't even consider the psychological effects it can have on the people when they think of these things. This is how changing the national anthem caused Nigerians to be alienated from their own country but these people are not mentally equipped to see that winning a fight just because they have the power has not made them win a war which they cannot solve.

We can come up with better ways of honouring people than renaming institutions that have been there for years.

University of Ife - Obafemi Awolowo University

University of Lagos - Moshood Abiola University of Lagos

Ogun State University (OSU) - Olabisi Onabanjo University

Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta - Moshood Abiola Polytechnic

Lagos State University - Lateef Jakande University

Bauchi State University Gadau - Sa'adu Zungur University (SAZU)

Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudi - Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUST), Wudil.

Federal University of Technology Umudike - Michael Okpara University (MOU)

Federal University of Technology, Yola - Modibbo Adama University of Technology
Katsina State University - Umaru Musa Yar'adua University (UMYU)

Northwest University Kano - Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano

University of Ilorin - Sheikh Alimi ibn Solihu ibn Janta University

Kwara State University - Olusola Saraki University

University of Sokoto - Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto

Anambra State University - Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University

University of Nigeria - Queen Elizabeth University of Nigeria

UNN, they are still coming for you folks because they wanted to rename it after Ojukwu. Maybe Tinubu will rename it after Buhari when he is 83 undecided

Quote this post (not everything) if you have any proposed or concluded name change to any of our institutions.

Life is funny. In 2012, Mr Tinubu suggested that Jonathan find something else to rename MKO Abiola after, not UNILAG. Chief Afe Babalola cited the unconstitutionality of the change. Even Wole Soyinka chastised the President for renaming UNILAG and not consulting with the people if they wanted it. What has happened? embarassed
