The creation of a new Super League has been announced, with several European football behemoths deciding to break away from UEFA and found their own competition.

A statement was released on Sunday night explaining that there are 12 founding clubs and three more who could before the first season.

What is the European Super League's format?

The statement from the organisers explained how the tournament will work.

"[There will be] 20 participating clubs, with 15 Founding Clubs and a qualifying mechanism for a further five teams to qualify annually based on achievements in the prior season," it said.

"[There will be] midweek fixtures, with all participating clubs continuing to compete in their respective national leagues, preserving the traditional domestic match calendar which remains at the heart of the club game.

"[There will be] an August start with clubs participating in two groups of 10, playing home and away fixtures, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter-finals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue.

"As soon as practicable after the start of the men's competition, a corresponding women's league will also be launched, helping to advance and develop the women's game."

Which teams would participate in the new Super League?
There had been a lot of speculation about who would compete in the competition, but now we know.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are the clubs announced as founding .

In other words, these clubs don't want to play UEFA Champions League again and they created their own franchise. Why is UEFA so angry? Do they think they have a monopoly over football tournaments?

if the ESL succeed , champions league is dead
the wealth and power of the founding is scary and if anything uefa should not punch above their weight
man city took them to the cleaners at the courts recently
so make dem pipe low in the upper echelon
fans want competition, fans want respect
but clubs are broke now and they need to innovate to cash out to keep the club alive

its a bloodless coup de football , led by thanos Perez

Whether UEFA likes it or not this league has come to stay, but imagine if this trend is allowed. One day, a new world cup would be formed where Africa and Asia will clamor for more representation. undecided

I feel these clubs knew about the greed of UEFA. They use these clubs to rake in billions annually and in turn give them peanuts.

I feel this move is more like a protest.

They want to discuss their options if they must remain with UEFA.

Like I said in the previous thread , it's all about Benji.

The new Super League prize is far better than the current Champions league price

Interesting. All these na to improve finances and preserve the round leather game.

I welcome the change.

But with the threat of Ban on founding clubs playing in their domestic leagues,a lot needs to
be put in place for ESL to fly.

In my own understanding. I think uefa is fighting to protect the interests of the smaller clubs. Now imagine if the super leagues succeed, people won't have any interest watching other competition. This in turn will deny smaller clubs the opportunity to generate revenue, there by gradually killing them. Because they won't have the finance to buy good players, leaving them with just low and average players. Whilst on the other hand, the founding clubs of the super League will generate much revenue, giving them the finance to buy quality players. Now at the long, European football will now be just for the super league teams as no one will be watching other competition.

Just take for instance. Compare the number of people that watch Europa League to the number that watch champions league. And since champions league is open for all through qualifying, smaller teams that enter the group stage are giving huge amount of money. These are the funds that makes the smaller teams to stay afloat.

How many times have any of you guys watched the Belgian, Russian, Ukrainian, Austrian domestic league. Clubs from these countries don't generate much from fans outside their country. It's when they qualify for champions league that's when they have the opportunity of been in the light of fans world wide.

If the super League succeed in out rating champions league, smaller teams will suffer and at the long run, football will just be for the big clubs only.

Just my own opinion.

The uproar about super league is a clear indication that racism in football isnt going away.

Just imagine how people are speaking up against Super league but kept quiet on racism.

One day a white called me "scimmia" which means monkey, i was like na dis tin b d racism..i smiled and called him "bianca scimmia"(white monkey).
He walked out from d pitch very pissed.

Until blacks learn to put on coat of steel instead of tears wen called monkey racism wont go away.

Hmm....just like a new artist who has a contract with a record label realizing he is now a star, he will definitely wants to create his own brand to earn more money. The truth is these big clubs have realized they can earn more standing on their own, Can we really blame especially with the wages and expenses they are incurring

These clubs just want their share of the pie...

The death of Champions league is inevitable unless they can renegotiate with these clubs.

So? Who gave FIFA the exclusive rights to organise football competition.

If the new association likes sef, they can change football rules in their tournaments as they wish
