The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has finally agreed to implement autonomy for state legislative and judiciary, with effect from May 2021.

Kayode Fayose, Ekiti state governor who is the NGF chairman, disclosed this to state house correspondents on Monday.

Fayemi said the decision was reached in a meeting attended by federal lawmakers, representatives of the judiciary and legislative staff, and Ibrahim Gambari, chief of staff to the president.

He insisted the governors never objected to full autonomy for the state assemblies and judiciary, adding that “the issue is about implementation.”

“There has been no objection from governors on judicial and legislative autonomies. As a matter of fact, it would not have ed if governors were not in in the first instance, in the state assemblies,” he said.

“As soon as the final document that is being cleaned up emerges, that is preparatory to implementation. We’re not going to put a timeframe in the air, but it will be implemented as soon as possible, definitely no later than the end of May 2021.”

thats some good news but not necessarily that things will change better but for the fact that the judiciary will also have the opportunity to chop like the executives ,because what is about to happen is transferring the right to steal from the executive to the judiciary

Since when do Governors begin to have power to decide when to obey court orders and executive orders duly signed by the President?

Well , someone set the bad precedence.

The judiciary must be severed from the apron string of the emperors.

Next is the local governments.

These guys will be damn rich....all of them are so happy.

Just imagine autonomy to do what you like.

Create your own budget
Spend your own budget without interference.

Bro, that is not even the point. Do you know that many court Halls and premises are so delapidated that one can't imagine that a judge sits there? Do you know that about two or three different courts share the same court Halls in a day, whereby one will sit from 9am to 12 noon, another 12:30 to maybe 2:30 pm, and so on? Do you know that many judges and magistrates has no official car? Why? Because they are waiting for the executive to service and maintain the Judiciary whose allocation they go to collect at Abuja in addition to their own. The judiciary service commission and the heads of courts are there to manage and for the allocation of the judiciary, not the executive. Out of the money accrueable to the judiciary, they can only manage to pay them salaries and some allowances, the rest they gulp down. That's the reason they don't want to let go. But enough is enough!

Let's wait and see what will happen in May.

The right to control their finances has always been. So, it's actually the executive branch that has stolen their right all these years.

May be this is an opportunity to practise true federalism or restructure. But whoever coalesced both legislative and judicial autonomy to the control of governors nearly destroyed governance at state level in Nigeria. No checks! No oversights!

It is just crazy, the amount of money and power resting with the executive. The beauty of democracy are improvements like this.

One day, hoodlums will be locked out of political offices too.

Can the state really manage their affairs, when they can't even fund their individual state budget.

They are yet to do it.

Wait till they do it.
