Ukraine will not recognise any peace deal made by the US and Russia if Kyiv is not involved, Volodymyr Zelenksy has insisted.

The Ukrainian president said negotiations between US and Russian officials expected to begin in Saudi Arabia tomorrow will “yield no results”, given the absence of a Ukrainian delegation.

“Ukraine regards any negotiations on Ukraine without Ukraine as ones that have no result, and we cannot recognise ... any agreements without us,” Mr Zelensky said.

Ukraine “did not know anything” about the US-Russia talks, he added, telling reporters he had learnt about them from press reports.

Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, arrived in the Gulf state earlier today and is expected to meet Russia’s delegation alongside Mike Waltz, the US national security adviser, and Steve Witkoff, the White House Middle East envoy.

The Kremlin has sent Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister, to discuss ending the war in Ukraine and to prepare the ground for a personal summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

Today, Lavrov said the Kremlin has no intention of giving up any territory it has seized in Ukraine.

In Paris, European leaders are expected to gather later to discuss their own peace plan for Ukraine.

He who pays the piper calls the tune. America gave the highest funds to this war. It is recourse that they and Russia decide how it ends after all, it is their resources. Another way Trump could go about this is to completely withdraw from the war, make deals with Russia and leave EU and Ukraine to their fate. EU can not do anything about it, rather they will whine about it and it ends there. Trump is doing them a huge favour.

It is important to note that the United States could pursue peace independently of European involvement and still achieve its objectives, provided Russia is willing to end the conflict. The Europeans failed to initiate negotiations during the early stages of the war and also lack the military capacity to prosecute the conflict, relying instead on distant U.S. .

Yet, they seek to sit at the negotiating table with the U.S. to dictate for Ukraine.
